“The Farmer Buys a Map, Not a Machine”

GeekWire’s John Cook put two Seattle-area startups side by side on the same problem. Carbon Robotics kills weeds with lasers. TerraClear maps them and hands the prescription to the sprayer you already own.

CEO Devin Lammers framed the difference in one line: “The farmer buys a map, not a machine.”

That is an economic distinction as much as a technical one. TerraClear Weed Maps are built from 1.5-millimeter imagery across every acre of a corn or soybean field, not a sampled strip. The system identifies weeds down to 1/4″. The map comes back the next day on average as a prescription your existing sprayer can run, which turns equipment already in the shed into a targeting tool. Growers running it use up to 80% less herbicide with the same control.

Lammers was straight with Cook about where the laser fits. He called Carbon Robotics’ LaserWeeder impressive technology for specialty crops and organics, then made the case that commodity acres run different math. Corn and soybean ground earns less per acre, so expensive new equipment has to pencil out before it goes in the yard. Software running on iron you already own clears that bar faster.

Cook traces the rock history too. TerraClear started in 2017 finding rocks in fields, work that taught the models to pick small objects out of big ones. TerraScout, the autonomous collection robot launched in February, now covers more than 1,000 acres a day.

The piece closes on something neither company sells yet: the field-level data both are stacking season over season, and what that could be worth to seed companies, researchers, and equipment makers.
